Secondary
Our secondary program at RISD (grades 6-12) offers a comprehensive and inclusive educational experience designed to ensure the academic and personal growth of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Our bilingual-bimodal approach, integrating American Sign Language (ASL) and English, supports students in achieving mastery in both languages while meeting Rhode Island State Standards and the Common Core.
Our highly qualified, certified teachers deliver personalized instruction in small, accessible classrooms, adapting their teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of each student. Whether students are pursuing rigorous academic courses to prepare for higher education or engaging in vocational training to build practical skills, our program offers multiple pathways for success. Special education support and individualized programs are tailored to each student's unique learning needs, abilities, and interests.
At the high school level, students work toward earning a fully recognized diploma, meeting state Performance Based Graduation Requirements (PBGR). Transition plans are developed starting at age 14 to ensure that each student is prepared for life after graduation—whether they pursue post-secondary education, vocational training, or community-based work experiences.
Beyond academics, RISD students engage with the broader community through field trips, extracurricular activities, and vocational partnerships. Students participate in educational events, sports, and leadership opportunities such as Student Body Government and the Academic Bowl. In partnership with local organizations like the East Providence Career and Technology Center, students also gain valuable vocational experience, preparing them for future careers.
RISD’s secondary program fosters both academic success and personal growth, empowering students to thrive in both the hearing and Deaf communities. Our goal is to help each student become a successful, independent, and contributing member of society.
