10 weeks
Saturdays
Dates, times, and location to be announced.
This level is designed for beginners. Students
will learn the handshapes of ASL by acquiring a basic vocabulary
which will include: numbers 1 - 99; the manual alphabet
(fingerspelling); colors; foods; verbs; nouns; family; feelings;
animals; simple pronouns; days of the week, and months of
the year. They will use these in sentences to provide a
meaningful context. At the completion of the course, students
will sign a short story using this vocabulary.
The text A World of Knowing will
be read during the course. This describes the establishment
of the first school for the Deaf in the U.S., the American
School for the Deaf in Hartford, Ct. This was also the beginning
for present day American Sign Language. It was the start
of an era of great opportunity for Deaf people that would
come to an abrupt end later on. It is easy to read, yet
provides insight into the early history of the Deaf community
in America.
There will be extensive practice and repetition to allow
students the time required to master these beginning skills.
They will be prepared to move on to level 2, which will
deepen their knowledge and expand their vocabulary.
The goals at this level are:
* For students to master the handshapes
of ASL, have a solid foundation vocabulary, and know how
to present this information in simple sentences. The emphasis
is on clear sign production.
* To understand the history behind the start
of Deaf education in American and the start of modern American
Sign Language.
